This is our final update for our Silver project. Over the year, we have grown in our musical ability and our speaking and performance skills. It was hard at first, realizing how we had to intertwine our personal instrument's sounds, two being higher and one being lower. We had to learn to adapt to our own musical needs and needs of the others in our group. We each had to use our skills to work around problems, taking extra time to solve them and get in harmony. We also had to adapt to the senior's musical tastes, learning what genres they preferred and songs similar to ones they enjoyed. The pressure to find the right type of music was very high, making us feel overwhelmed at times. It was sometimes a challenge to find good music with enough time to learn it. It was especially hard for us, being an uncommon trio of violin, viola, and cello. Most trios are two violins and a cello, so we had limited options available to us. Our biggest difficulty was our schedules being full and clashing with other group member's. Near the middle of our project we were able to find less and less music, literally scouring the internet for hours to find a single piece. Due to family, school, and one medical emergency, we had little time to really perfect our music for some performances, having to reschedule or cancel for another date to give us more opportunity for practice. Even with all the difficulties that came with such an important project, we still had fun performing for the seniors together, and growing as a musical group.
This May at Samaritan Bethany, we did our last performance for the wonderful residents there. We took on four rather long songs, a challenge which we were ready to handle after months of working together as a group to improve our performance skills. The song we started with was Gravity Falls Theme by Disney, then we played Waterfall by Toby Fox, followed by Rondeau by J.J Mouret, and the last song we did was Fiddles on Fire by Mark Williams. The residents really seemed to enjoy Fiddles on Fire, some commented that it was the best song that we had played. We decided to take it on as a bit of a challenge piece, and it seemed to accentuate our individual and group skills.
